I did have some issues with the speaker hearing me when I spoke to it while music was playing, but I’ll get into that later. If you have a Google Chromecast, getting anything to play on your TV is seamless. Even pausing and playing the content is pretty quick and reliable just by telling the speaker to pause or resume playback.

But Google’s latest creation is among the smartest around for the price and its clever design lifts it above the competition. Our frequency response chart was measured with our old testing system. We have since purchased a Bruel & Kjaer 5128 test fixture to update our testing and data collection.

Our volume tests measure both the maximum loudness a speaker is able to produce and how smoothly volume increases and decreases based on user input. Our spatial tests measure a speaker’s ability to reproduce stereo sound in all directions, taking into account localizability, balance, wideness, distance, and directivity. Please note that wideness is 0 for mono speakers and for speakers that cannot deliver a significant stereo effect. At nominal volume, the frequency ranges are well balanced, with particularly consistent midrange frequencies . That said, high-end is slightly lacking, contrary to the Big Four company’s promise.

For this reason, consider this an experiment and not a foolproof plan, and make sure you check the return policy prior when using a trusted retailer. Google only receives audio data from your device when it detects interaction (e.g., “Hey Google”). You may access, review, and delete your audio recordings from your Google account at any time. The only time that Google shares audio recordings with third parties is when you use third-party apps or services with the device. Google isn’t carelessly sharing audio data, but it will share information with an affiliated home security provider if appropriate.

First, make sure your pair of Google Nest Audios are connected over Wi-Fi to the same router to play in stereo. From there enable pairing mode on both the turntable and your Nest Audio using the Google Home app. The only real hurdle that might prevent this from working is if once in pairing mode your turntable can’t automatically connect. Without a phone or a computer to manually select the Google Nest Audio, it’s hard to guarantee if they will pair when both set to Pairing Mode.
Spectral artifacts, on the other hand, can appear at quiet, nominal, and maximum listening levels . For example, bass resonances and distortions can manifest on tracks exhibiting powerful low-end frequencies, such as in Electronic music, regardless of the volume. Our artifacts tests measure how much source audio is distorted when played back, along with such other sound artifacts as noise, pumping effects, and clipping. Distortion and other artifacts can occur both because of sound processing and because of the quality of the speakers. Normally, if you place a speaker in the corner the low end sounds amplified, almost like putting your smartphone in a cup.
Google Home Max review
I have a real time home energy monitor, and while it may be a 10w speaker, in practice I'll have 4 running and it's barely a blip on the screen. Because of the large size, the Google Home Max can really push some air so the low end is fairly strong just because of physics. The rubber bass pad also keeps the rumbling of the speaker from disturbing anything around it.
Most of the controls come from your voice, commanding Siri, but you can also tap the touchpad for basic playback and volume controls. The Sonos One is a pricier speaker at $219 USD and with that you get a sleeker design, ethernet port, and more comprehensive app. With the Sonos app, you can equalize the sound to a minimal degree, create a multi-room system, use it as your go-to media player, and more. You take and receive calls to and from mobile phones, tablets, and more directly through Google Duo—so long as you’ve set up Duo calling. You can call non-Duo affiliated numbers, though emergency calls can’t be made from the Nest Audio speaker.
But if it’s sitting upright, it flips the motion so that moving your finger down toward the surface will quiet it. The Google Home Max is the first smart speaker we've seen with serious audio performance. If you're looking for a voice-activated speaker and want excellent sound quality, the Google Home Max is the best option on the market. If you want great audio and don't want to mess around with more complicated speaker setups, the Home Max is a solid option. You can program the HomePod mini to recognize up to six people’s voices which is useful for those who live with multiple roommates or family members.
When you use affiliated services with your Google Nest Audio, you’re subjected to each service’s privacy policy along with Google’s privacy policy. Michael Brown / IDGReaching around the back of the speaker to mute its mic isn’t the most convenient scenario, but it’s an action I rarely find myself performing in my home anyway. It also owes its good ranking to its great volume step consistency and its excellent maximum volume.
When available, your speaker or display will automatically update to the latest software version. Below are the specifications for Google Nest and Home speakers and displays . At $399 / £399 / AU$549 many will be better off purchasing a Google Home and supplementing it with a soundbar equipped with a Google Chromecast Audio or Chromecast Built-in. In fact, Google’s big speaker is much more elegant than it has any right to be, what with clever touches like the moveable resting pad and orientation-friendly touch functions. It’s also appreciated that its looks stand out if you choose to notice it, but blend into the scene during everyday use. As we saw at Google’s October 2017 event, the Home Max can use a USB-C to Ethernet dongle to put together a more reliable wired connection.

Dynamics are impressively well preserved at soft and quiet volumes. Despite the promised “clear stereo sound in the entire room,” the sound stage could be much wider. It is actually only when standing close to the speaker that a listener can perceive a stereo dimension.
Google provides a generous 6.5-foot power cable with a diminutive two-prong plug at the end (death to wall warts!), which makes the speaker easy to place. You can orient the cabinet either horizontally or vertically, moving a magnetic silicone furniture pad to either the broad side or the narrower right-hand side that will become the speaker’s bottom. Two of the Max’s far-field microphones are on the left side, so you wouldn’t want that to become the bottom. The speaker’s overall dynamics remain particularly precise and impactful at soft and even quiet volumes.
Most of the major streaming services, be it YouTube Music, YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, etc., have built-in functionality that will cause the button to pop up automatically in the app. But what makes the Home Max a smart speaker is that you can speak to it. If you don’t feel like browsing through your phone to find that new Childish Gambino song, you can just ask the Home Max to play Feels Like Summer thanks to tiny built-in microphones. Unfortunately, you can’t say “Yo Google” just yet, but “Okay Google” or “Hey Google” work just fine. It’s hard to recommend a smart speaker over a dedicated home audio setup or any other Bluetooth speakers, but the Google Home Max has weaved its way into my life in a way other products haven’t.
As all Google commands work, you need to start with, “Okay, Google” and then say, “connect to Bluetooth”. The Nest Audio supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming but lacks a 3.5mm input and ethernet port. Ambient IQ works well when streaming podcasts and listening for Google Assistant responses. Running water triggers Nest Audio to increase volume levels when streaming podcasts.
Sure, this isn’t the most scientific test ever devised but it does highlight how at higher volumes the microphones on the speaker have a hard time picking up voices. Though it’s on the pricey side, Google Home Max has set an exemplary example for any and all smart speakers to come. Anyone invested in the Google ecosystem should add the Nest Audio to their collection.
